"He handed me his car keys, and I started to do my thing", responded Ahmed to a question at the Touchpoints Business MeetUp about incidents that challenged him when he started his business. Ahmed Dublat , a Syrian entrepreneur , fought to establish his car cleaning business, We-Go . For instance, his business license was refused twice, but he did not quit visiting the responsible office at the Ministry, the Chambre de Métiers, as well as other concerned parties, to get a favorable answer.
"You have to go out there, keep trying and even fight if you have to," he says.
It is challenging to get the necessary authorizations required to operate a craft-related business in Luxembourg, especially for migrants. In order to obtain his authorization for a car washing business, Ahmed had to prove three years of experience, which in turn required obtaining written evidence from the Middle East.
Luxembourg is unique in this way, requiring three years of experience to launch a business in craft activities such as car cleaning, lawn maintenance, photography, film-making, graphic design and more. Furthermore, professions in baking, butchery, blacksmith, house painting, and more are protected by a Brevet de Maîtrise, which is up to six years of formal learning in the given graft in either German, French or both. With little or no credible reasons for such restrictions (protection from bankruptcy or better management skills are often cited, though they could well be obtained differently), many suspect they exist primarily to protect pre-existing businesses and curtail competition from newcomers, especially coming from neighboring countries.
Some migrants have years of experience in professional crafts that are not standardized or formulated with certification in their home countries as the emphasis there is placed on practical learning. Some crafts do not even formally “exist” in the protected list of “professions”, like the barber who falls under the general hairdresser. In Luxembourg, immigrants, some of whom have fled deadly wars and other devastating situations, are required to provide written evidence of their experience, like Ahmed who had to prove that he cleaned cars (professionally) for at least 3 years. Furthermore, these non-business inherent challenges add to a mountain of difficulties that prevent this group of aspiring entrepreneurs from starting businesses that tap into their particular interests and skills.
"So, I took the key and started cleaning the car", Ahmed continued. "To operate my steam cleaning machine, I use an electric power generator". He was cleaning a client's car at the client's workplace inside an indoor car park. As expected, the machine produced some fume and vapor.
"I forgot the car park had smoke sensors that can be triggered by water steam and soon, bammm! Loud fire alarm and water spraying everywhere", he said while laughing and participants of the business event all laughed with him. The incident, as he recounted, left him feeling withered as people panicked and came into the car park. "I told them I was there to wash their colleague's car", he said. Like his eventual successful establishment of We-Go, there was a happy ending to the fire alarm incident. The client's colleagues laughed with Ahmed, collected his business cards and booked appointments for him to wash their cars too.

Sometimes, profitable businesses arise from accidental discoveries. Alexander Freedman, who goes by “Oscar,” established Call-Home S.A.R.L in 2005, after spending almost an hour waiting in line for a telephone booth when he first got to Luxembourg. Recognizing an opportunity, Oscar decided to establish a store for phone booths, mostly for lower-income foreign workers who needed to call home.
When Oscar first opened his shop, people would peer in through the window from the outside - suspiciously at him, a “lone black man” in the store, as he described - wondering whether it would be safe to come in. Recreating the scene during the Business MeetUp, he got up from his seat and walked outside. Moving his head from the outside as if trying to get a better view, he assumed a worried expression. Oscar was making light of challenging moments, and the audience laughed.
He didn’t have any customers for the first few days, which isn’t unusual for new businesses. Then, once people got to know him and the shop, they started coming in droves. A couple years later, however, the growth of mobile communications and internet services decimated his business, though some booths remain in use, mostly for calling developing countries with poor internet. Faced with looming closure, Oscar responded by diversifying into financial and logistics services. Now, through the use of MoneyGram and ..., he helps the same clients as before, but with sending goods and remittances – usually cash – to friends and family abroad.
Migrant entrepreneurs face myriad obstacles: linguistic and cultural barriers, weak support networks, low capital, reluctant banks, limited access to information. Without substantial capital guarantees, traditional loans are virtually impossible, and many banks decline even to open a basic bank account. To be sure, some of these issues affect entrepreneurs in general, but they affect migrants disproportionately.
Racism represents another obstacle. Oscar, who originally hails from Nigeria, recalled his experience living in Vienna, Austria before moving to Luxembourg:
“I worked for many years in Austria as a dishwasher in restaurants and wanted to do something better with my life,” he said, “I went to the government employment agency to ask about courses I could do to become an IT specialist but was told I couldn’t,” due to racial discrimination. At first, Oscar didn’t mention the reason, only after being asked.
As one of the most diverse countries in the EU, Luxembourg is a welcoming place for migrants. Nevertheless, studies show that racism and discrimination persist against people of colour and Muslims, impeding their social and economic mobility, as highlighted i.e. by a recent study specific to the Luxembourgish labour market
One day, Luxembourg tax officials visited Oscar’s shop, asking to speak with his boss. “I’m the boss,” he replied.
“No, we mean, we want to speak with the owner,” they asked.
“Yes, it’s me,” he replied, to looks of disbelief.

In 1789, Benjamin Franklin wrote in a letter, “Our new Constitution is now established, and has an appearance that promises permanency; but in this world, nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes”.
Today in Luxembourg and other countries around the world, corporations and high net earners have found ways to escape the centuries-old certainty of taxation by either completely evading or paying significantly lower taxes. Although this aggressive tax system, as it is called, is legal, it requires expertise far from affordable to everyone. A less difficult way for budding entrepreneurs with limited resources to realise their business ideas is to start as sole-proprietors or micro-enterprises. They are neither able to afford the services of accounting experts for complex tax returns and social security calculations, nor able to implement “optimised taxation plans”. Recognising these challenges, Touchpoints ASBL organised its Business MeetUps event at the accounting firm, GT Fiduciaires SA, for entrepreneurs to get insight into the complicated world of corporate accounting.
GT’s associate-founder, Gernot Kos, talked about some taxes and social security obligations in Luxembourg both for individuals (sole-proprietorship) and companies. He also advised participants on easy ways to document financial transactions such as the two-column income and expense note but cautioned on their limitations for business entities other than sole-proprietorship. Mr Kos was assisted by Raymond Schadeck, a well-known auditor, administrator and project initiator in Luxembourg. Together, they explained how ensuring a clean financial record can facilitate tax calculation and save the life of a business.

Relationship. Image. Trustworthiness. These were some of the words emphasised by Andy Bowyer at the Business MeetUps, held August 16 at Shamiyat Restaurant in Schifflange. The CEO and co-founder of the space company, KLEOS, was guest to the business event organised by Touchpoints ASBL to inspire and inform budding entrepreneurs.
The space engineer stressed that companies, irrespective of size or sector of operation, are characterised by similar risks and challenges. He explained further with the example of financing of business activities. Whereas a big company may need millions and a small restaurant, thousands, proprietors of both will be faced with similar challenges in finding investors. The same goes for finding clients, he added. He advised that an entrepreneur should be trustworthy, develop a positive self-image and seek genuine relationships with people.
The creation of Shamiyat Restaurant by Mohammed Shadi al-Halabi and Mohammed Arak reflects some of Mr Bowyer’s recommendations. Their efforts in networking through participation in events and imaging building culminated with the implementation of the restaurant project. The restaurant provided a relaxed and friendly atmosphere for a successful event and they served delicious intercontinental dishes that were well received by participants.

Sometimes, the opportunity to establish a company can result from a misfortune event. Recognising opportunities in such unpleasant situation is key. Riad Taha’s story holds true to this. After breaking the screen of his "iPhone", he found that not only could he fix it himself for less than the market price and quicker, there was an opportunity to do this professionally and build a business.
During the July 26th Touchpoints Business MeetUps event at the social popup restaurant, Chiche!, the Syrian refugee shared his Luxembourg entrepreneurship story. His initial idea has grown beyond repairing phones to providing other IT services (Information Technologies). He currently operates from his first shop in Etterbruck and also from another in Esch-sur-Alzette. Riad shared with the house how he opened a shop in Luxembourg city but closed it within six months. The experience was an interesting topic of discussion as participants reviewed with Riad the reasons for closing the shop. Whereas, in Etterbruck, his business enjoys a less competitive market, Luxembourg was quite the contrary. With low sales to cover high expenses, it was a better decision to close it, participants agreed.

Living in a new country adds an extra layer to the challenges an entrepreneur will face in the process of setting up his/her business. A particular challenge is an absence of social capital essential to facilitating the acquisition of other resources needed for turning ideas into successful businesses.
At Business Meetups, held over lunch at Syriously Oriental Restaurant on Wednesday, June 26th, entrepreneur Vanessa Defournier explained how to acquire social capital. True to her expertise as a coach and facilitator, her approach is simple and practical. She established her company, Innerlatitude, shortly after arriving in Luxembourg. Her experience supports the idea that the life of an immigrant is more of a continuation and less a beginning from scratch - experiences acquired elsewhere are useful in the new country of residence. She talked about her frequent attendance of social and business events however remotely related to her business interests. These places and situations provide opportunities to meet people, build networks and acquire social capital quickly and steadily. She emphasised the need to be open minded and not be scared to make mistakes, ask “foolish” questions and learn.
In her experience, maintaining a positive mindset is important. She recounted how her negative mindset during her first few months in Luxembourg impacted most aspects of her life.
More than 10 budding entrepreneurs of diverse nationalities attended the event. They asked questions both specific to their projects and generally useful to all.

Business MeetUps - Julia Dumna Restaurant]]>Touchpoints asblhttps://www.sleevesup.lu/single-post/2019/05/16/Business-MeetUps---Julia-Dumna-Restauranthttps://www.sleevesup.lu/single-post/2019/05/16/Business-MeetUps---Julia-Dumna-RestaurantThu, 16 May 2019 10:02:00 +0000
The beautiful view from the terrace of Julia Dumna Restaurant offered a relaxed and enchanting experience as participants sat and watched the sunset on the distant horizon. They chatted with each other and counted the last minutes of the day's Ramadan fasting. Then began another interesting Business MeetUps with entrepreneurs Erica Worsley and Kenan Hussein, partners and proprietors of Julia Dumna Restaurant & Event Centre.
Erica started by talking about her experience as a former finance expert and also a couple of years spent organising events in refugee reception centres in Luxembourg. She met Kenan and they decided to put their resources together in creating a restaurant. As usual, participants' curiosity in the areas of financing, business registration processes, partnership and operations/management of the restaurant was expressed in the form of questions, resulting to a rich and inspiring discussion. Hussein noted that the name of the restaurant was inspired by the famous Roman empress of Syrian origin, Julia Dumna whose reign promoted gender and education reforms. Notably, this resonates with Erica's values. Some of her work with the refugee centres involved improving the living standard of women and other vulnerable groups.
A participant wondered why they decided on situating the restaurant on the far end of the city rather than around the centre as most restaurants opt for. Erica explained how this was both a strategic and operational decision that has proved beneficial to the restaurant. She noted that a good percentage of their patronage comes from families and event organisers. Usually, this niche market requires a sizeable restaurant hall, a relaxed atmosphere, with sufficient parking space for vehicles, and situated in a less busy neighbourhood. Thanks to Erica and Kenan's decision, Julia Dumna Restaurant ticks these requirements and more.
Like most businesses, there have been some challenges faced by the restaurant. Erica highlighted some of these challenges they have faced and surmounted. For instance, there is the management of staff and employee turnover. This is a common challenge in restaurant-business. Julia Dumna currently has a team of almost ten. Most of them are of different cultures, and nationality and Beneficiaries of International Protection, BPIs. Rather than consider this a challenge, Kenan, who is mostly responsible for managing this aspect of the business, explained how it has been beneficial to them in expanding and enhancing the restaurant's overall appeal. A representative of ADEM was available to further explain the agency's work in making Luxembourg's employment market more accessible to BPIs and also, their close work with employers, including Julia Dumna Restaurant.

It is generally agreed by entrepreneurs that resources required to create and operate a business are limited. This affirms the famous definition of economics by Lionel Robins. Surprisingly though, there are some valuable resources that are almost limitless. During the Business MeetUps at Syriously Restaurant in Beggen on Wednesday 3rd of April, the entrepreneur, Klaus Gehlhaar, inspired participants by helping them realise the abundant resources in everyday experiences, professional or personal, negative or positive. His history as an entrepreneur demonstrated how everyday dealings with people and the environment can be harnessed to the benefit and profitability of a business. Klaus, the partner and co-owner of the furniture company, Zaor Studio Furniture, shared events from his life, even as a teenager, that has shaped and benefited his entrepreneurial ventures. The atmosphere of the event was elated by the generous recall of his experiences and journey as an entrepreneur. For two hours, participants asked questions and discussed practical ways they can actualise their business ideas. At the end of the event, faces brimmed with smiles as a result of what had been learned, the inspirations gotten and also, the delicious menu offered by Mahmoud's Syriously Restaurant.

Helping people is NOT a crime!
This is why we have joined forces with organisations around Europe to launch the
first European Citizens’ Initiative to empower a #WelcomingEurope and reclaim our right to help
. Through this direct democracy tool, we can compel the European Commission and Parliament to respond to our demands. Join us now and sign the petition!
Governments cannot cope with the challenges posed by migration. Most of us want to support people who need it, because we cannot be indifferent to their fate. Millions of people have mobilized to provide support. Today, we want to be heard. Demand a welcoming Europe! We call on the European Commission to act.
Here's a summary of the proposal for which the Commission is invited to act:
1. Citizens from all over Europe want to sponsor refugees to give them a safe home and a new life. We want the Commission to provide direct support to local groups assisting refugees who are issued a national visa.
2. No one should be prosecuted or fined for providing humanitarian aid or shelter. We want the Commission to prevent Member States from punishing citizens in solidarity.
3. Everyone has the right to justice. We want the Commission to guarantee more effective means and rules to defend all victims of labor exploitation and crime in Europe, as well as all those who are victims of human rights violations on our borders.

On July 2nd, a dinner event was held in order to introduce ten Sleeves Up participants to four volunteer teachers and plan future conversation practice. Eight volunteer instructors (3 for English, 4 for French, and 1 for Luxembourgish) and 14 students are now involved in the program. This generous support from volunteers has allowed us to set up individual as well as group conversation practice for Sleeves Up participants, depending on need.
This program emerged out of recognition that improved language skills increase the chance that their projects succeed. Although all Sleeves Up participants have taken language courses, they lack the critical conversation practice necessary to activate and reinforce what they've already learned. Regular conversation practice with volunteers allows us to fill this gap.

Ever wonder why some people get "lucky" by finding investors or good jobs, while others don't?
On Wednesday, April 18th, Sleeves Up attempted to answer this question in the context of its 5th "Sleeves Up Meet Up," a series of lunch discussions designed to aid and inspire budding entrepreneurs with their projects. This time, we partnered with 6zero1 and Compellio to discuss "networking," what it is, why it's important, and how to do it. Thirty people, including a mix of European and non-European residents, attended the event.
Wafa Abo Zarifa and Ayman Natouf, graduates of Sleeves Up Workshops, prepared a tasty Palestinian and Syrian lunch.

The third Sleeves Up Meet Up took place at Sahara Shisha and Lounge Bar in Differdange, co-owned by Mustafa Al-Faraj and Ahmed Alkhafaji. With a third partner, they took over an existing business in the summer of 2017. They shared their experience about what went well and what they would do differently today.
Mustafa and Ahmed explained why they decided to take over a business instead of starting a new one, differences in terms of procedure, and difficulties and opportunities they encountered. There were sixteen participants in total, many of whom posed questions and actively participated in the discussion. A tasty lunch plate, filled with Sahara's top culinary choices, accompanied the event.
The opportunity was also taken to inform attendants about the imminent start of the first and this year's only Fit4Entrepreneurship session in English. Fit4Entrepreneurship is a training and coaching program offered by ADEM for unemployed persons who'd like to start their own businesses. The program represents a natural extension of Sleeves Up workshops, and five Sleeves Upers have chosen to sign up.
